The Satisfaction of an Old English Rose Blooming in Your Garden…

How is it that the days seem so long and yet the weeks so short ? Summer, full of promise and scented like honey. Golden too is the glow that brings the early morning sunlight and ends the lengthened days in slow motion.

In New England our Summers are Short but, Oh, So Sweet…
I feel so privileged to have each day to spend on important things, things that hold meaning…

Watching Calvin Experience Summer…
Two days a week, we watch our grandson, Calvin. We watch him grow and learn about the world around him, and wonder… We watch the summer through a child’s eyes…

Calvin Experiences the Gardens
Calvin chases butterflies between flowers and drives trucks down the garden path. He experiences fresh berries from the bushes and tomatoes warm from the sun. We watch him staring in amazement, as sand disappears between his fingers over and over. We watch as he ventures tentatively at first into the cool lake water, then headlong with laughter.

The Satisfaction of Eating What we Grow

To plant a garden, or two, or several, and to reap the flavorful, fragrant and visual bounty daily, is a pleasure difficult to explain. Several times a day I wander by or through the herb garden to inhale the sun-kissed scents of pungent, spicy, citrus, sweet and green. Closing my eyes, the fragrance takes me to exotic places…

The Satisfaction of Wood for Winter. Even on those 90 degree days, there’s no dulling the satisfaction of having all the wood for the coming winter stacked under cover. Kudos to Pat for getting all the wood in this year before the first leaf has even fallen!

The Satisfaction of Color from Dark Earth and Tiny Seeds…
Watching the damp patches of sea straw covered earth where I buried the seeds, I am ultimately rewarded when the first fine shoots venture into the spring air and continue reaching until sturdy stems bear fruit, or vegetables or flowers as the case may be…
In the summer, most days we have produce from our own vegetable garden for one or more meals. Most days begin with picking blueberries and hoping to outsmart at least a few of the jays and other birds that think the bushes belong to them. Such satisfaction…

Water Splashing and Sand Between your Toes…

While looking for raspberries among the lush foliage of the shrubs, I feel a small hand tugging at my dress hem, reminding me Calvin is waiting for the expected share of berries. I have early memories of ‘helping’ my grandmother pick blueberries. On the days that Calvin spends with us, I usually wait for him to pick the berries. He has learned very quickly to distinguish between dark ripe blueberries and bitter green ones. A good thing to know. I look down and he is waiting with his mouth open and trusting like a baby bird. So precious. Will he remember this someday when his life is adult and complicated? I hope so.
