I could write volumes about this topic. Fortunately, someone else has already done this. Her name is Roxie Zwicker and she not only writes very interesting books that are well researched, she gives awesome tours as well. This is beginning to sound like an info-mercial but after having read some of her books and taken a couple of her tours, I’m a devotee!

Spirited Location in Portsmouth

A couple of years ago, I was able to participate in Roxie’s Haunted Portsmouth tour. It was a couple of hours of entertainment and very informative as well. Recently, I went on her Haunted Pub Tour of Portsmouth with some family members and some other folks. We all learned a lot about the ‘spirited’ side of the seacoast’s rich history.

I don’t want to give away any of the specifics so I am not going to expound except to say both tours were well attended and the pace was very comfortable. Roxie geared the sites to the group’s specific interests and was very good about accommodating anyone who needed a bit of a rest now and then.

I will say that this tour began at Maine-ly New Hampshire,www.maine-lynewhampshire.com, a great little shop on Deer St. where we were treated to a tasting of wines from local vineyards, by host Ken Smith. That was very interesting and set the tone for our journey.

The tour took us through much of historic Portsmouth, which I will never see in quite the same way again, and ended, at a local pub with a colorful history. There we were able to visit with Roxie, ask relevant questions and enjoy a pint in the historic atmosphere.

I highly recommend Roxie’s tours, which are loaded with information and are very reasonably priced. Roxie hosts tours in Maine as well as New Hampshire. Please check out the variety on her website; New England Curiosities: newenglandcuriosities.com
